The Institute for Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is looking to fill the position of a

PhD Student (all genders welcome)

This position should ideally be filled by May 2026 with a contract initially limited to three years. The regular working hours will be 19.90 hours per week, and the salary corresponds to the E13 TV-L (50%) level. The position is affiliated with the group of Prof. Dr. Nadja Simeth (https://nasc-lab.com). The lab works at the interface of photochemistry and biology and focuses on incorporating biomolecules in chemical, biohybrid, and biomimetic systems.

The prospective candidate will design and synthesize various photoresponsive molecules and investigate their properties spectroscopically, in collaboration with groups from biology and biochemistry on the Göttingen Campus and beyond. 

The prospective PhD student will
-    work in an interdisciplinary, inclusive, supportive, and international research environment
-    develop a research project with increasing scientific independence
-    will travel to and collaborate with international partners
-    receive personal supervision, a structed training, and regular feedback
-    be guided to supervise undergraduate students

Your profile
You…
-    hold or will hold a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related areas,
-    have very good communication skills in written and spoken English,
-    have a strong background in organic synthesis and experience with biological testing (ideally on cells),
-    have experience in data processing and analysis, ideally with UV-Vis spectroscopy and HPLC,
-    ideally have good communication skills in German to support teaching,
-    ideally have some experience in organic photochemistry
-    be creative, and curious in acquiring new techniques
